From November 2nd to 5th, the XVII National and X International Congress on Democracy will be held, entitled “Democracy in Question: Between Historical Memory and the Dispute over its Meaning”
With over 30 years of history, the National and International Congress on Democracy, organized by the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations of the UNR, has established itself as one of the most important academic social science meetings in Argentina and Latin America.
The Congress will once again bring together researchers, teachers, students, graduates, institutional representatives and civil society organizations from November 2nd to 5th, 2026 to discuss the main challenges of contemporary democracies.
The call for proposals is open until August 18th with multiple participation options, including panels, roundtables, open symposia, book presentations and lecture sessions, forming an exchange space that brings together contributions from the various disciplines that make up the field of social sciences.
“It is one of the most important academic events, not only in our country but also in the region, which has been held for more than three decades at the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations and is attended by teachers and students from different universities in our country and the region, but also the main references of the different disciplines of the social sciences,” said Dean Cintia Pinillos.
He emphasized that, in addition to being a space for academic discussion, it is an arena where political and media actors participate, and it opens a debate that integrates civil society organizations. “It is intended to contribute to the public debate with the community as a whole. We want to invite everyone…” Universidad Nacional de Rosario to participate,” he emphasized.
Focusing on the challenges facing contemporary democracies, this new edition proposes to reflect on a scenario marked by growing citizen disenchantment with the capacity of democratic institutions to respond to the demands and needs of societies.
In this context, the Congress calls upon the social sciences to contribute new theoretical and methodological tools that will allow us to understand the complexity of the problems facing current democracies and contribute to the recovery of their legitimacy and credibility.
The 2026 edition will also be marked by two fundamental anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of the 1976 military coup, which imposed state terrorism in Argentina, and the 40th anniversary of the publication of "Transitions from an authoritarian government", a collective work that marked a new way of approaching the processes of democratic transition in Latin America.
From this perspective, the Congress proposes to recover historical memory and, at the same time, renew the commitment to the production of knowledge and critical thinking to strengthen democracy.
Those interested in participating can submit their proposals until August 18. It is worth noting that this year the event will be free for all members of the UNR community (faculty, staff, graduates, and students), both as presenters and attendees.
