Lucrecia Martel's visit to Rosario will be accompanied by a series of public events offering an opportunity to explore the thought and work of one of the most important filmmakers in contemporary cinema. On Saturday, August 8th and Sunday, August 9th, the director, screenwriter, and educator will participate in talks, presentations, and screenings at various venues throughout the city.
The program will begin on Saturday, August 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the University Cultural Space (ECU), located at San Martín 750, where the Universidad Nacional de Rosario She will be awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, the institution's highest honor. The ceremony will also include a master class given by Martel.
That same day, from 18 to 20 pm, the activity will continue at the Roberto Fontanarrosa Cultural Center, with the presentation of “A Common Destiny”, in a proposal organized by the Universidad Nacional de Rosario in conjunction with the Secretariat of Culture and Education of the Municipality of Rosario. The author will talk with teacher, researcher and journalist Cecilia Pelliza about the publication and, at the end, will sign copies.
The program will conclude on Sunday, August 9, also from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the El Cairo Cinema (Santa Fe 1120), with a screening of the documentary “Our Land.” The event, organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Province of Santa Fe, will feature Lucrecia Martel, who will participate in a discussion with the audience moderated by journalist Flavia Campeis.
With this agenda, Rosario will be the setting for a series of activities that will allow the public to approach the work, reflections and perspective of one of the most recognized voices in Latin American cinema, in a journey that combines academic recognition with cultural exchange and debate on audiovisual language, memory and the challenges of contemporary societies.

La Universidad Nacional de Rosario The title of Doctor Honoris Causa will be awarded to filmmaker and screenwriter Lucrecia Martel, one of the most influential directors of contemporary cinema, thus recognizing an artistic, intellectual and pedagogical career that has left a deep mark on Latin American cinema and on the reflection on the social, cultural and political complexities of our time.
The award is the highest honor bestowed by the UNR and highlights Martel's exceptional contribution to the development of audiovisual language, communication, and critical thinking. Throughout her career, her work transformed the ways of narrating and representing Latin American reality, establishing her as an essential reference point for world cinema.
From her debut film, La Ciénaga , to her most recent production, Nuestra Tierra , and including seminal films such as La Niña Santa , La Mujer Sin Cabeza , and Zama , Martel built a filmography that explores power relations, inequalities, community ties, and the mechanisms through which the meanings that organize social life are produced and contested. Her unique perspective redefined contemporary cinematic language and opened new ways of thinking about the representation of Latin America.
In addition to her acclaimed work as a director and screenwriter, she has maintained an extensive teaching career at universities, film schools, and internationally renowned cultural institutions. Her seminars and workshops, particularly those focused on screenwriting, directing, and sound design as narrative tools, have become essential resources for generations of students, researchers, and filmmakers worldwide.
The aesthetic originality and conceptual depth of her work have garnered recognition from major international film festivals and institutions. * La Ciénaga* was distinguished at festivals such as Sundance, Berlin, Toulouse, and Havana; * La Niña Santa* was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, while * La Mujer Sin Cabeza* was also part of the official selection at that prestigious event. In 2019, she presided over the jury of the Venice International Film Festival and received the Konex Award as one of the five best female film directors of the decade in Argentina. Her work has been the subject of retrospectives at world-renowned institutions such as Harvard University, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Lincoln Center, the University of Cambridge, Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou.
In the rationale for the resolution approved by the University Council, the University emphasizes that Martel's artistic production constitutes a sustained intervention in the processes of meaning-making that organize social life. Her films invite us to question dominant discourses, make visible what usually remains off-screen, and propose new ways of seeing, hearing, and understanding reality.
Furthermore, the resolution emphasizes that his films remind us that communication is not merely about transmitting information, but also about creating the conditions for new questions, new sensibilities, and new ways of encountering otherness to emerge. In this sense, the UNR recognizes a trajectory that has decisively contributed to broadening the horizons of critical thinking, democratic culture, and knowledge production—values that the Public University promotes and defends as part of its commitment to society.
