The popular Rosario artist will be honored with the public university's highest degree.
La Universidad Nacional de Rosario (UNR) will award its highest academic recognition to musician and composer Rodolfo “Fito” Páez, from Rosario, who will receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa as part of the institution's new anniversary celebrations.
The award seeks to recognize an essential cultural icon of the city, whose work transcended borders and generations. Born in Rosario in 1963, Páez is considered one of the most influential artists in Argentine popular music. From his beginnings in the Trova Rosarina to his definitive consecration with "El Amor Después del Amor," the best-selling album in the history of Argentine rock, his career combines innovation, poetry, and a deep connection with local and Latin American identity.
Over the course of more than four decades, the artist released more than 30 albums, starred in international tours, ventured into film and literature, and shared stages with figures such as Charly García, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Mercedes Sosa, Caetano Veloso, and Joaquín Sabina, among many others. His work, marked by sensitivity, rebellion, and tenderness, became a cultural heritage that accompanied entire generations.
His talent has been recognized with multiple national and international awards. He has won eight Latin Grammy Awards in various categories, including Best Rock Song, Best Singer-Songwriter Album, and Musical Excellence, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album in 2021 for "La conquista del espacio." The Konex Foundation also recognized him three times for his contributions to Argentine popular music. These awards, coupled with his cultural impact, establish him as one of the most influential and current figures in Spanish-language music.
The UNR recognition also underscores Fito Páez's lifelong connection with Rosario, a city that recurs in his songs and which he represents on every stage. In recent years, the musician has also become involved in academia, sharing his experiences with students from various universities around the world.
“Awarding an honorary doctorate to Fito Páez is much more than honoring an artist: it is embracing a son of our city who taught us that music can be a refuge, a source of memory, a source of rebellion, and hope,” said Rector Franco Bartolacci.
The date and location of the award ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks.
