The University for Older Persons (UPeM) was implemented in 2011 (under the name of the Open University Program for Older Adults) with the aim of offering courses, workshops and other educational, cultural and social activities for people over 60 years of age, as a way of realizing the social mission of the UNR. It was created as a non-formal education program dependent on the Extension and Territory Area of the UNR. Universidad Nacional de Rosario, whose academic content covers a variety of topics that are part of the curricular path of the UNR's academic units, and also aims to be a space for continuing education related to current issues such as digital inclusion and human rights approaches.
Its objectives are to establish a systematic link between the University and the older adult community and to promote socio-educational transformations that contribute to their quality of life. It is aligned with the parameters of the Inter-American Convention on the Rights of Older Persons, particularly Article 20:
Older persons have the right to education on equal terms with other sectors of the population and without discrimination, in the modalities defined by each of the States Parties, and to participate in existing educational programs at all levels, and to share their knowledge and experiences with all generations.
Since its inception, it has adhered to the active aging paradigm, a concept that must be taken in a broad sense, which not only involves taking care of one's own health but also participatory integration into society. The University for Older Adults' activities, which are framed within this perspective, foster intrinsic motivation, prioritizing unique and meaningful elements for each individual.
Currently, the program combines in-person and virtual instruction, with topics ranging from Fine Arts, Music, Gardening, and Philosophy, to Political Science, History, Psychology, and Law, to Economics, Mathematics, and Health. In addition, the program works in coordination with districts, municipalities, and communes in the region to decentralize the offerings and make them accessible to a greater number of people.
Registration is done through the SIU Guaraní system. Those new to the Program must create a username to register (tutorials are available on the same page to guide you through the registration process).
