Metabolic study of the province of Santa Fe: an analysis of the interface between economy and environment

Summary and objectives of the project:

Currently there is a line of academic research that seeks to determine and make visible the "hidden" flows of matter and energy. In this sense, there is a field of study based on the concept of socioeconomic metabolism and its study, mainly at the level of nations and cities, but not at the level of provinces. That is why the approximation of the metabolic profile of the province of Santa Fe, would allow establishing clear relationships of the Pressure-State-Response type between the socioeconomic sphere and the natural environment at an intermediate scale.

Based on this, the objective of this project is, first of all, to determine and analyze the metabolic flow of materials and energy in the province of Santa Fe, based on the productive activities that take place in its territory. In a complementary way, it seeks to establish a specific reference methodology to enable future studies on absolute and relative (de/re) materialization, and the analysis will also include correlations with biophysical indicators of environmental pressure such as the ecological footprint, the nutrient footprint and the Water footprint. Finally, it seeks to analyze the possible future trends of said metabolic flow from demographic projections on the province of Santa Fe.
