The Network of National University Publishers of Argentina (REUN), of which UNR Editora is a part, expresses its deep concern regarding the repeal of laws 25.446 and 25.542, known as the Law for the Promotion of Books and Reading and the Law of Single Price for Books published in our country.
These regulations, enacted at the beginning of the 21st century, were designed to protect bibliodiversity, strengthen the publishing production chain, and recognize the book as a cultural asset, in addition to a market commodity. Their implementation has allowed for the expansion and consolidation of the work of publishers, bookstores, printers, translators, authors, and all those involved in the production and distribution of books, while also guaranteeing access to publications at a fair price throughout the country.
The experience of the Argentine publishing market demonstrates that, during the last decade of the 20th century, the concentration of the sector led to job losses, the discontinuation of numerous titles, and a growing predominance of foreign translations. In this context, the now-repealed laws were fundamental tools for promoting Argentine publishing, facilitating the circulation of books in small bookstores in large urban centers and in rural towns, and ensuring more equitable conditions for the entire book industry.
Argentine public universities, represented by REUN, consider it essential to preserve public policies that promote access to books, reading, and knowledge. Books are not merely commercial objects: they are vehicles for culture, education, and the building of citizenship.
REUN reaffirms its commitment to defending Argentine books, national publishing production, and the conditions that make a diverse and accessible bibliographic offering possible. Because readers, authors, publishers, and booksellers deserve more and better books.
