Foundation: Tourism constitutes a complex social phenomenon, with important implications and impacts at an economic, environmental, cultural, political and technological level. Likewise, it interacts with factors exogenous to the tourism system itself, whose influence is capable of driving notable movements within it. In this sense, important transformations stand out in the global economy and the centrality gained by the service sector, environmental deterioration and the consequent mutations in the world of work and in the forms of leisure. Also, processes linked to the mediation of new technological interfaces, which operate by contracting spaces and accelerating times. These trends configure a pattern of social change where the concept of smart tourism gains social and academic relevance.
Smart tourism refers to a tourism management model that is based on two large pillars, which account for the aforementioned systemic nature of tourism, where its different aspects are strongly interrelated. Thus, on the one hand, sustainability stands out in relation to the responsible management of natural resources. They represent a fundamental element of tourism development, where it is necessary and cannot be postponed to preserve the essential ecological processes and the biological diversity of the territories. On the other hand, communication technologies, which enable notable innovations for tourism supply and demand, and constitute a fundamental tool for the creation and management of sustainable products and processes. From this perspective, the innovation and incorporation of technologies allows us to develop competitive advantages, add value to proposals and make more efficient decisions, which incorporate work with data for the purposes of measuring indicators, knowing degrees of satisfaction, evaluating preferences and building from of these instruments systems of continuous improvement.
