Foundation. Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a treatment aimed at people with chronic respiratory disease, which aims to improve and maintain the maximum degree of functional independence.
The benefits of PR are the reduction of dyspnea, the rate of exacerbations, hospitalizations and the use of other health resources as well as the improvement of exercise tolerance and quality of life. An official document published by the American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society (2015) highlights the underuse of PR. In 1995, the US Agency for Health Care Policy and Research conducted a review of the intervention outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention programs. This document demonstrated the reduction of cardiovascular mortality by 20-25%, with improvements in functional class and control of coronary risk factors. This is achieved through carrying out a supervised and monitored exercise program; education and advice regarding cardiovascular risk reduction; and changes in lifestyle.
On the other hand, the working group on improving quality of life of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine recommends that a kinesiologist with critical patient management be available every day in intensive care units (ICU).
At the same time, an experience in our field of work demonstrated that the incorporation of kinesic care in an ICU as part of the patient's comprehensive care could be one of the determining factors that influence the reduction of days of mechanical ventilation and the stay in the ICU.
Regarding the pediatric population, the evolution of respiratory kinesiotherapy has been significant over the years. Initially, it focused on the rehabilitation of adults with chronic lung diseases. However, with advances in the understanding of pediatric diseases, and the specialized training of kinesiologists in therapeutic techniques, care expanded to the children's population with more holistic approaches and technologies to improve the effectiveness of said therapy, achieving great advantages. in the elimination of secretions, improvements in lung ventilation and optimization of respiratory efficiency. Also in postoperative situations or during acute illnesses, it can be crucial to prevent complications such as atelectasis (partial or total collapse of the lungs).
Therefore, we are convinced that we must generate tools to facilitate access to training plans in Cardiorespiratory Rehabilitation and provide society with greater availability of subspecialized professionals in this discipline.
